While keeping in mind that professional learning occurs in various ways and contexts, I regularly participate in local and extended learning communities of inquiry and practice. Listed below are some of the PLCs that I have attended and contributed to.

A session where we had the chance to explore the exciting and rewarding next step of teaching abroad. In this workshop, we gained an understanding of the multi-faceted aspects of working in another country and in a different curriculum.

Inclusive Practices – Supporting Newcomers in the Classroom

Learning a new language is an overwhelming experience for anyone — especially if you are supposed to be learning in that new language at the same time! This PLC session focused on exploring strategies to support Newcomers in our classroom and help them feel welcome, empowered and more comfortable.

Creating Learning Environments PLC

An ETFO session on managing challenging behaviours through supportive and effective classroom management. During this PLC, my colleagues and I considered ways to build teacher-student relationships that lead to mutual respect and create an inclusive and positive learning environment. We also explored the importance of mindset, effective interventions and responding to disruptions quickly and appropriately. We learned effective, yet simple-to-implement strategies to motivate, manage, and empower all students.

Connecting Language Acquisition through the Arts. In this workshop, we experienced hands-on activities exploring the link of language acquisition through the Arts, specifically visual arts and drama.

This ETFO workshop was designed specifically for occasional teachers. It provided classroom management strategies, effective discipline techniques, and suggestions for supporting students with different learning styles.

Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy in Practice (CRRP) 

Through the Education Equity Action Plan, this PLC session explored the implementation of teaching practices, curriculum and assessment that are culturally reflective of and responsive to the students that we teach, so that all students see themselves and their classmates’ lived experience reflected in what and how they are learning.

Voices of Experience. This session connected us with a community of teachers across the province. Writing report cards, meeting with parents, designing lesson plans, etc.

Partners Reflecting on Inclusive and Diverse Education, Gender, Identity and Sexuality

Session 1: A Classroom with Room for All – ensuring equity and inclusion for LGBTQI2S students in Ontario schools.

  • An OCT workshop that offered us skills and knowledge to support students facing discrimination and to be the catalyst for creating positive, inclusive environments in Ontario’s classrooms.

Session 2: Introduction to LGBTQI2S+Safer and Accepting Schools

  • In this workshop, we developed an understanding of LGBTQI2S+ realities for students and how homophobia, bi-phobia and transphobia impact student safety and performance. This session explored concrete strategies for creating safer schools for all students.

Session 3: Gender Identity & Gender Expression in the Classroom

  • Family Services à la famille facilitated discussions about the following:

    • Gender Identity & Gender Expression Gender Identity

    • Gender Identities and Gender Non-Binary Identities
